Adelaide
---
I feigned a chuckle at his response.
"That's what they all say." I pushed the water and pills into his hands, letting the bathrobe drop to my feet. I seductively sat down on top of the crappy hotel desk in only a very lacy pair of bra and panties.
---
His eyes widened at the sight and his hands shook as he opened the pills, gulping down all of the water.
I didn't have to fake my smile this time.
He unbuckled his belt and let his trousers drop to the ground.
I mean, it wasn't a bad size but it certainly wasn't the best. I opened my legs, panties still on and he made his way over to me. I wrapped my arms around his back before feeling for a pressure point and knocking him out cold.
I let out a sigh of relief when his body slumped against mine and I carefully laid him on the bed. I picked up the pill packet, empty glass, robe, my knives and dress before sitting back down on the desk and leaving my fingerprints everywhere, so if the police investigated, they would think he had sex through fingerprinting and eyewitnesses and when she left, he had a heart attack.
Ricin took a long time to kick in and kill the person who ingested it but I don't think the target would be waking up anytime soon.
I sat back down on the desk.
That was anticlimactic.
I had to fight the urge to slit his throat or stab him in the heart, to do anything other than this pathetic excuse for a hit. I couldn't even leave my signature on his ugly pig face. Over the past few years, my signature which was carving a thin line from the top of the face to the chin, had, according to Jaekyung, become infamous and I had been specifically instructed not to sign for the death.
I wonder what his face would like all cut up?
I smiled to myself, maybe I was just too good at my job. I put on my dress and messed up my hair, making it seem like I just had sex. I left the room and checked the time. 10:58 pm. By the time I got to the main entrance, it was 11 exactly and a familiar-looking Tesla was waiting for me.
My smile grew wider as I slipped in and saw who was waiting for me there.
"Did he hurt you, carota?" Romano's comfortingly familiar voice asked me, full of worry.
I chuckled, "I think that you forget that I've been trained to be an assassin since I was born, Romano."
I heard him let out a sigh of relief and I relaxed into the comfortable seat around me. I slid the heels that I had stolen from Jaekyung off my feet.
I looked over to Romano who was concentrating on the road with a certain intensity. His bottom lip jutted out slightly, looking a little red and swollen. Had he been chewing on it?
"The man that he brought with him was a complication and I didn't want any unwanted casualties. I couldn't get the poison into him in any other way without drawing unwanted attention so I took matters into my own hands. It's in his bloodstream now."
I yawned, stretching my arms in front of me and Romano nodded his head mutely, turning off the highway to a quieter street.
"How did we not know that he was going to join?" Romano whispered.
That struck me. How did we not know? We had been preparing for this for the past week, Jamie claiming that he had exhausted all research paths. Jamie.
Something didn't sit right in my stomach. Jamie had never made a mistake in MI6, why did he make one now?
Unless he did it on purpose.
What did he gain from it? Did he know the target? Surely, he would be making more from our deal with Romano than protecting his victims. I sat quietly seething in the passenger seat of the Tesla until we pulled into the driveway of the now-familiar mansion. I opened the door with so much force, I thought the car door would fall off.
With my heels in my hand, I stormed into the mansion. After a night void of emotion, all of them seemed to be rising at once.
"Where is the bitch?" I shouted, grabbing the attention of Jaekyung to ran into the room and most surprisingly, embraced me. I hugged her back quickly before asking her again, in a quieter voice this time, where the bitch was.
"Am I the bitch?" His velvety voice echoed from the middle of the winding staircase.
I untangled myself from Jaekyung's warm embrace and watched as he made his way down the stairs. I was beyond angry, I was livid.
He stood in front of me, a guilty expression painted on his face.
"Ads, you always get like this after-."
"Do you understand what kind of position you put me in tonight?" Gone was the previous anger that was rushing through my veins, replaced by a dangerously calm venom.
He didn't answer my question, looking unfazed and leaning back on the staircase.
"The target showed up with another man by his side. When were you going to give us that tidbit of information? Or was it not important enough for you to tell us?"
His eyebrow quirked up slightly, "By the target, do you mean Simon Fawker? He has a name y'know, Addy."
Before I knew what I was doing, I raised my hand and backhanded his cheek which let out a loud, satisfying ring.
"You do not get to make decisions about what I call the person I killed tonight, Jamie. You don't understand the position you put me in. You not only endangered our entire operation because of your lousy research job, but you also put Romano and Jaekyung in a vulnerable position. I had to make direct contact with the target, which could've killed me if he knew half of what we were planning to do to him tonight." I felt anger start to bubble up inside me again and I took a breath.
He wasn't even worth my anger.
"We are going to have a long, hard talk about this tomorrow, Jamie. Don't even think for a second that I've let you off the hook."
He stood a step towards me but I put my hand up to silence him.
"My name is Adelaide. Not Ads. Not Addy. Adelaide. I only let people I trust to give me nicknames and you are far from that, Jamie. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a nice, hot, shower and sleep in late tomorrow morning and nobody can do a fucking thing about it."
I forcefully pushed past Jamie and climbed the winding staircase, collapsing on my bed as soon as I made it into my room. Something still didn't sit right with the whole situation. If I were smart, I would've left the nagging feeling alone but, being me, I didn't.
I jumped into the scalding hot shower, letting the water burn my skin. When I climbed out, my skin was bright pink. I shrugged on Romano's shirt which still had the lingering scent of him, one that I had grown to quite like, and his boxers which I still hadn't returned. One thought lingered in the back of my mind.
What did he have to gain from this?
A soft knock echoed through the room.
