Aiden grinned, then pulled back farther on a sudden worry. “Did you get in trouble? I mean, you’re my guardian, not theirs. Are there rules, or something?”
Yes, Eskandar responded matter-of-factly, speaking through Little Cass as usual. Our role as guardians is to create helpful coincidences, encourage probability when it’s necessary to help our charges. We are almost never meant to do more than that.
“So, no pushing people out of the way of cars?”
No. Eskandar looked genuinely regretful. I wish I could have kept you from getting hit. But since you had to find your practice sword, you couldn’t leave before your father forced you to put on your bicycle helmet
“Oh. Wow,” Aiden said. “I was joking. But…you really did save me?”
Of course.
“Thank you,” Aiden said seriously. “But, what you did, then, for me and my friends…” He stared at Eskandar, his eyes widening in alarm. “How much trouble are you in? What’s going to happen to you?”
