10 Chapter 10

"I need those documents." He barked on the phone, reminding his assistant about the papers he had requested a few minutes ago.

Damon was not usually this impatient. Or maybe he was, but today was more severe than his norm. He could only guess it had nothing to do with work but more to do with the woman that kept creeping into his mind.

He was a great negotiator. He could charm his investors and clients with just his words. And he could manipulate even his enemies to agree to his terms.

"So, what is wrong with her?" He silently muttered, irritated that he had not heard from her yet. But truthfully, it was barely twenty-four hours since he left her at the hospital.

Still, he believed his offer was more than fair. It was frankly more than generous. Any woman in her right mind would not have second thoughts about agreeing to his proposal.

Therefore, what could be the problem? He could only assume that it was her. Did she want more? Maybe he should add more.

But how much was enough for a girl like her?

"Why do you look like a bull ready to charge if you see a red cape? I can see steam almost coming out of your ears." His friend walked into his office with a mocking tone and satiric smile.

It would seem his friend had found his situation the subject of his entertainment for the night as he took a chair across from him and examined him, clearly amused.

"What are you doing here?" He questioned his friend's presence. "Don't you have work to do, Travis?" Unlike his friend, he could not see anything funny about his unique circumstance.

He was a busy man. He believed that money did not grow on trees. Unlike what other people thought, he had to work hard for every penny he earned.

And he was sure his friend was no different from him. He also had several things on his plate. Therefore, seeing him again today was quite unusual.

"I think you need to look outside your window." His friend pointed behind him. "It is already late." Forcing him to realize it was already dark outside, confirming the time when he glanced at his watch.

"So?" He stubbornly responded, not wanting to acknowledge that his friend was right.

However, he was used to working late and leaving the office in the middle of the night. Therefore, this was not new to him. Although, he would admit to himself that he had lost track of time.

"So, I believe it is time for you to unwind." Travis finally stood and walked toward his door. "Wenna, go home. You can continue with that early in the morning." His friend dismissed his secretary without asking for his permission.

"What are you doing?" He was about to complain, but his friend would not have it as he stopped him.

"Your secretary is not your slave. She has a life too outside this building." Travis grumbled, acting quite concerned for his worker's welfare.

But he knew him better. Travis only cared about himself when it suited him. At that moment, he doubted his employee's interest was his friend's priority.

"Let us not pretend that this has anything to do with Wenna. Why are you here?" Damon finally gave up on getting anything else done as he closed all the files on his desk and questioned his friend.

He and Travis had been buddies since he could remember. They played together when they were still toddlers and went to the same school until college.

They were more likely to be brothers than Dale since they seemed to come from the same cloth. They had so many things in common compared to his brother, who was the exact opposite of him.

"I need a wingman." Travis ultimately revealed his real motive for showing up unannounced. "You see, I met this incredible woman. But she only agreed to go out with me on a date if she could bring a friend."

He shook his head, already expecting such a stunt from his friend. What else was new? But how could he blame him when he had used those same stunts before?

He remembered using Travis as his wingman when picking up girls. But those days were over for him. He had grown tired of the game.

And besides, he still had a situation that he had to fix. Going on a blind date would only complicate his situation.

"I am sorry, man. But I can't." Damon casually said, not supplying any more explanation.

His friend looked at him as if he could not believe he was turning him down. But he was serious about his decision.

"Don't tell me that you are marrying that chick. Dale's ex?" Travis furrowed his brows as if in disbelief. "I thought that was a joke."

"No, you can't be serious." His friend suddenly paced the room before stopping before his desk. "Why her? I know you need to get married, but why pick her."

He could see that his friend was trying to rationalize his decision. But still, he could not wrap his mind around it.

"There are millions of women who would die to marry you." He continued. "Why Dale's ex?" He seemed concerned about his brother.

Why? Indeed.

"Because we have a son." He finally revealed his perfect explanation for marrying that woman. No one would question why he suddenly proposed to her.

His friend's jaw dropped, looking like he was in shock. He could understand his reaction because nobody knew about that night. He never told anyone about what happened between him and the bride.

Therefore, his friend's reaction was only natural.

"A son?" Travis finally found his voice back, looking more perplexed than before. "How could that happen?"

"Of course, I knew how it happened. I mean, when did it happen?" His friend was rambling questions after another as he tried to make sense of his situation.

"Is that why she was here?" His friend seemed to try to piece the puzzle in his head, eventually forgetting about his date.

"And how did you even know that he is your son? She could only be saying that. Have you done a paternity test?"

"All you need to know is that I am marrying her, and Oliver is my son. There is no doubt about it." Damon told his friend confidently, showing his friend no signs of doubt.

But how did he truly feel about that? He could still remember watching the young boy, seemingly lifeless, as he slept on his hospital bed.

Did he want him to be his son? Was he even ready to be a father?

And what about the mother? And his brother?
