“Whoa,” Darby muttered softly while looking at Riordan and Dillon. Then he focused his gaze on Dillon. “Is there a spell or a ritual you can perform to take you back in time for a brief moment so you can peek at the murderer’s face?”

Dillon was quiet for a moment. “There are a few rituals and spells related to time-traveling. I don’t even need them.”

“But?”

“How much do you know about time magic?” Riordan interjected, and Darby instantly turned toward Riordan.

“Honestly, not much.”

Riordan nodded. “Dillon can go back in time if he so chooses, but the magic may not allow him to do what he wants to.”

“Why not?”

Dillon bit his lower lip, and he looked sad. “Things happen for a reason. I’m sure you’ve heard of that saying before.”

“Yeah,” Darby responded. “How does that have anything to do with—”

“Magic may stop me from traveling back in time,” Dillon cut Darby off midsentence. “Or it may permit me to do that, but I still won’t be able to see who the murderer is.”
