Chapter 21: Best Friend's Advice

Ronnie’s POV

It’s Monday morning, and I still can’t get Nancy and our fight out of my head.

She woke up before I did on Saturday and left, and she hasn’t answered any of my calls or messages since. The temptation to drive after her was almost too much, but if there’s anything my mother taught me, it’s to give people space when they show they need it.

A knock on my office door interrupts my thoughts. “Come in,” I say glumly.

I’m not even surprised when I see Max’s head of tousled blond hair pop in.

“Are you busy? There are some numbers on last month’s spending sheets that aren’t matching up.” Max holds up a small handful of papers.

“Yeah, come on in. I could use your advice on something.” I loosen my tie and unbutton my suit jacket. I feel so claustrophobic and confined today, and I can’t figure out why.

“You need advice from me? It must be pretty serious.” Max’s eyebrows pull down in concern as he sits in a chair across from my desk.
