I like how this novel doesn't pretend that Riftan's obsessive and possessive behavior is healthy or romantic. Yes, Maxi did follow Riftan to battle because she couldn't bear being away from him but that was more to do with the fact that she was worried about him dying in battle. Riftan, on the other hand, just does not want to be separated from Maxi. Or at the very least, he just wants her to be in Anatol if he needs to be away from her. How is that fair, Riftan? Also, I like how Agnes is low key sarcastic about being born a woman when Riftan threatened to duel her. Oh, she just had to fight for every bit of freedom she's had all her life, no big deal, but being able to avoid getting challenged to a duel? How lucky!
I know maxi should become a mage. It is the only solution. I then read how Riftan feels and my heart bleeds.for him. She will probably have to go. Surely the king can see that the Duke lies. makes me wish I lived in those times just for a short while. Get rid of the Duke and then come back. foolish thoughts I know but us old ladies like to day dream. great book.
Riftan's obsession really is unhealthy. He doesn't see and respect Maxi as a partner properly; rather, it's more like he worships her, holds her high above himself... And that's not good for either of them. They need this time and space to, hopefully, build enough self-confidence to understand they DO deserve to love and be loved. Still... Three years. D:
As expected. Maxi could not hold out being separated from Riftan during the Livadon campaign. How can she expect to endure a three year separation? And as Riftan pointed out he already endured three hellish years without her. The only thing that gave him some distraction was killing monsters and a dragon.. She still thinks she is worthless. When he is telling her nothing else matters to him. He will build a future in another place for both of them.
