Because of the importance of maintaining the royal bloodline to protect the fairy realm, fairy royalty were allowed to choose their spouses. Unions forged from love were more likely to result in heirs, after all. 

Ianor held onto the foolish, desperate hope that Azariel would choose him when she turned eighteen and the marriage ceremony was to take place. But in the meantime he was content being by her side. 

The other member of their trio…his motives for hanging around her were murkier. Venethan Rosewood had come into their lives three years after Ianor became a guard. He was exceptionally skilled at magic and had been invited by her tutor to help teach them because they were all close in age.
