I've read many novels where the authors way overdue the tragedy. The parents die, other kids beat him up, teacher spits in his face, neighbors sell him into slavery to be used as a medical experiment. All the while everyone in existence goes out of thier way to spite him...🙄 This, however, feels believable and reasonable. I like this kind of backstory way more.
