"Female… what are you called?" A light, hesitant, female voice says in my head. I freeze, my head going a thousand miles an hour, Holy Macaroni and Chicken Nuggets! I stare at the creature and it's staring at me intently. I must be going crazy, I shake my head and the creature squints its eyes, slightly. "You heard me?" The same voice says in my head. Without thinking, I nod in response. The thing releases a face of surprise, it's eyes widening, its muscles relaxing a teeny bit. I keep my eyes taped on it, or I'm guessing her. I'm so surprised that I can't speak, so… I try to speak in my mind back, "Umm… Hello? Yeah, I can hear you? whatever you are… No offense." I really don't want to get this thing mad. It looks even more bewildered when I'm guessing it hears me. "Hello, as I was asking, what is it the humans call you?" I hesitate when she asks this, I just met this creature, closely reminding me of a dragon. Like, two minutes ago, should I trust her? Then I realize, I thought that out loud. "You can trust me, no one knows about me. By the way, yes I'm a dragon. The answer to your last question." I think of what Chris said earlier, "… or a dragon perhaps…" No, Chris has a funny imagination, maybe it's just a coincidence. Yeah he really doesn't believe in dragons…. does he? "I'm Samantha, my friends call me Sam. What's your name?" The dragon's eyes smile slightly, glad that I chose to trust her. "My name…" she says in my head, hesitant, "is Emberlynn." A mix of fantasy, romance, coming of age, and adventure. Authors note: Hope you all like it and ALL comments/suggestions/ideas are welcome. also I'm trying to decide if this should be a trilogy or not. *need help on that* if you could, THANKS A BUNCH! ^-^
"Samantha"
Clouds…Stars… A lake below me, I'm not moving but the wind is blowing hard against my face and around my body. What's that sound? Is that flapping? A bird? Who am I? I don't remember. The lake could show me, right?
I look and all I see are blue eyes. But that's not right, I have wings, huge wings. The eyes aren't normal either, they're… reptilian. I think I scream but all I hear is the lyrics of "Without Me" by Halsey, invading my ears.
I wake up to the sound of my alarm, my favorite song "Without Me" by Halsey playing, going off. The strange dream drifts away as I get up and get my morning routine going, I'm so scared for my finals today. I should've studied but I had spent the afternoon hanging out with my boyfriend Chris and had completely blown it off.
The dream leaves my mind completely but all I remember are blue eyes, but it's not the eyes of a human staring back at me. They're the eyes of a reptile-something that's been happening ever since my seventeenth birthday about a week ago.
I look at my clock on my blue end table. 6:30. If I don't get up now, I'm going to be late for school I get up and go take a shower, I take a little longer than I wanted. I dry off quickly and get a plain black long sleeve shirt on and manage to put on dark blue skinny jeans that hug my legs. I ran downstairs almost forgetting my backpack, and grab a banana from the fruit basket, and hurry outside. Dad's car isn't here, probably at his work, arresting people and doing car chases, that sort of thing. It's cold, but of course, it's going to be cold in Payson, Arizona in December. Good thing I wore those jeans. I see a car drive up to the pavement, Chris. He stops in front of me, and I tumble inside struggling to get my belt on with my numb fingers. Chris cranks the heater to full blast and helps me with my buckle.
"Hello Gorgeous, You look icy this morning." He jokes and smiles his goofy smile using his weird sense of humor.
"Ha-ha, very funny." I try to say with my chattering teeth, I giggle at the sound of my voice and huddle to the vent. I look over, hearing him chuckling and he puts the car into gear.
While his eyes on the road,
"So, how was your snowy night? What were your dreams about?"
Ugh! A question I didn't want him to ask. Could I just be silent?
He taps my shoulder,
"Well if you're not going to tell me, then, I'll tell mine… it was about the apocalypse. It was pretty cool, also you were there with me, we were the only people, did stuff during the night..." He wiggles his eyebrows. I fight the urge to laugh and waved him off dismissively and got upset that my lips stopped chattering.
I look at him slowly,
"I don't know, but I was flying, I felt huge vibrations, I saw bright blue eyes looking at me from a pond, I think it was a reflection, you must think I'm crazy…"
I look out of the window,
"Really? What do you think it means? I mean you could've been a bug… or a dragon perhaps." I spaced through that last part, thinking he just has a funny imagination. He puts a hand on my shoulder seeing how confused I was. I place my hand on his, thankful for his comfort. He cruises down the snowy road towards Payson High School, home of the Lions, hoping that the day will be better.
