I'll stick with the story. I will admit that things did seem to take a weird twist when the familiars were introduced. Having the first familiar, Sarise, was fine. I liked her a lot. But then it pretty much degenerated into a *** story and it did get away from the fairies and the love of magic like how the story started. It sounds good that you're doing the rewrite; still, I do hope at some point Sarise does make a comeback. If not, I'd like to see more of the emotions Sarise had for Soar to appear in one, some or all of the fairies in his group. The love Sarise had for Soar felt very real, and I'd like to see him in a relationship like that again. Good luck with the rewrite, and I look forward to seeing how your story will progress. =)
