I think Ari is the same as those books which were bounded by spells for important and safety purposes. If my memory is right, in VE Katie has seen a shadow of a big four legged animal when she was about to go out of her room and go to Sylvia's because she was scared but Ari has prevented her which ended in her going to Alexander's room instead.
