Because in this world you need societal skills and connections with the right people. It doesn't matter if you get the top awards in school. Sure it gives you a wee bit advantage, but in the dog-eat-dog world of ours, if you don't have any backing, right people don't know you, nor do anything to get the right connections, then you're doomed to die forgotten
This chapter/story concept and writing is already waaaay better than anything I've seen in the historical section. Literally the 1st and like 3rd ranked stories are exactly the same at the beginning but this was different and refreshing while at the same time being relatable. I too am an unemployed art major, but I'm very impressed her HS had a reunion every year. Why doesn't she go to her University reunions? Those would probably be more fun and she might even get a job from those people
