They Are a Powerhouse

Bay Institute  — Spring 2000

It was the first day of school after spring break...

The once empty halls are now filled with endless chatter of the students who are busily sharing their spring break fun.

The sun was as bright as the youthful glow of each student in the room. The energy and vigor emanating from the crowd diffused the remaining chill of winter into vapor.

A random paper plane flew across the room, hitting the boy who sat by the window. He was busy in his world, but every once in a while, he would glance towards the door —  patiently waiting for that special someone to arrive.

He crumpled the paper plane and threw it back. "Hit me with one more paper plane, and I'll make sure you will eat that for lunch," he said in gritted teeth.

He swiftly took a peek at the wide-open door. With no shadow of the little fairy in sight, he lifted the comic book back to his nose.

The truth is, every time a shadow would cast along the empty hallway, he would sit ramrod straight and fix his eyeglasses, and every time it was not her, he would clear his throat and sit lazily as he poured his attention back to the comic that he was pretending to read.

"Hey, Four-Eyes! Four-Eyes! Hey, look at me! Go with me to the base!" An ungracefully thin and tall boy in his highschool uniform called out to his friend who was "busy" reading a worn-out Archie comics. He threw another paper plane at his friend's way to get the latter's attention, seemingly forgetting the threat that Four-Eyes gave earlier.

Four-Eyes did not seem to be bothered and did not even spare him a glance,  which only drove him mad. The irritation forced him to march forward to snatch the comic away from the poor guy and he used his height to his advantage as he held the comic up in the air.

"Give it back to me, you ugly giant!" Four-Eyes tried to stand on tippy toes to rescue his baby, but his height was not working for him at all.

'I religiously drank Cherifer throughout winter up to spring break, yet I didn't even grow an inch. What an unfair life this is!'

Then he calmly took off his eyeglasses, folded it, and placed it on top of the table. He took a deep breath before he jumped, but that did not work as he hoped for.

"You know what they say that could help you grow taller?" Giant mysteriously asked in an attempt to catch his friend's interest.

Height is a sensitive topic to Four-Eyes and Giant knew that to get the former's attention, you either grab his comics or tell him a random trick that could help him grow taller.

"They said… you need to stretch and massage yourself down there every morning." Giant teased as he eyed Four-eyes's nether regions, sending the latter into a fit of internal rage.

"Get the hell outta here, Giant!" Poor Four-Eyes whispered his annoyance to his friend. He fell for this hooligan's trap again.

"Hey! You stop messing with him, Giant!" a high-pitched voice reverberated across the room that made everyone shake at their places.

Her footsteps were light and airy, an occupational disease from her years of training and dancing ballet.

Light-brown hooded eyes, straight-edged nose, and a sun-kissed skin but that voice… how could an unrefined sound belong to such a fine lady?

"Macaaaw... Macaaaw..."  Giant slowly dragged the last syllable of her name as he tried to soothe his earlobes —rubbing and tugging it — from the noise attack of the girl they called Macaw.

"Somebody let you out of your cage again, I see," he continued. Macaw could only roll her eyes at the beast's remarks.

"Somebody let you out of your cage again, I see." She mockingly echoed his words with her chin up in the air, obviously unafraid of the giant before her.

She taunted him to make the first ugly move - both are itching to start a fight, yet that is a move they both know too well would never happen even in their wildest dreams. In fact, this became a ritual between the two frenemies and a terrible habit at that.

Outsiders would often get nervous whenever the two started to pick up their non-stop bickering and banters, but those who knew them well would go on with their own lives and leave the two to settle their differences… or maybe not.

Blame it on their raging hormones or the lack thereof, but these two are inseparable.

As soon as he saw his chance, Four-Eyes saved his Archie Comics from Giant the Thief and kicked the bad guy on the shin that sent him hopping and limping on one leg.

Down the hall, as if Moses had parted the Red Sea, people started to make way for the arrival of the two enchanting fairies of the campus.

While looks of admiration could be seen on many, looks of annoyance and envy could also be seen on some.

They honestly looked average, but what sets them apart was their elegance and grace. One could not deny that the girls were born with a silver spoon in their mouths.

And no matter how much stares go their way, the two fairies would always walk along unperturbed as if they are in a bubble of their world.

One had a long chestnut hair whom they call Sunny, and the other was sporting a black bob cut whom they call Bright.

They walked side by side, talking in whispers and would giggle from time to time that somehow amplified their fairy-like aura even more.

Behind them walking was another sight to behold - The King of Hearts of Bay Institute.

His monolid eyes that disappear as he smiled has a reputation of sending a few innocent souls to the school clinic.

"Hey, ladies! Good morning!" he lazily said as he sent a wink towards a group of giggling teenage girls who screamed in delight by the sudden acknowledgment.

"We looooove you, Rookie!" the girls screamed in unison. Besides being the King of Hearts, he was also awarded as Rookie of the Year in tennis.

He recently transferred from the seminary earning him handsome points from the get-go, and once the annual sports festival kicked in, he almost knocked off Giant on the podium, increasing his fanbase to tenfold in the process.

Little did these girls know of the secret he's been keeping for years.

As soon as the trio entered the classroom, they joined the other half of their omnipotent group - Four-Eyes, Giant, and Macaw.

To each other, they are friends.

To the others, they are a powerhouse.
