The Author’s Paradox

The center of the universe. The undisputed victor. The one who ultimately wins hearts and undoes enemies with a triumphant smile. That is the role of the protagonist. And all in their orbit are merely supporting characters in the epic that is their life. As for me? I was just a writer, whose words seldom echoed beyond the silence of my own mind. And when they did, it was in the form of a novel – my sole outcry in the vastness of literary oblivion. Until the day the thread of my life snapped… and in the blink of an eye, I was reborn. Inside my own work. With clenched fist and resolute soul, I faced the new reality. Reincarnating into one's own story seems promising, right? To be the immortal hero, the aura of invincibility, the inevitable romances. Except no. The plot twisted and I returned not as the hero, but as an extra – an NPC in the affable terminology of gaming. Away from the spotlight, on the fringes of adventures and loves, I am just a figure that completes the backdrop for others to shine. And honestly? What a relief! Why, you might ask, do I not wish to be the chosen one? Simple – protagonists are magnets for mishaps. Living on the edge of calamity? No, thank you. Death and I have already crossed paths; dramatic pretexts can keep their distance. Thus, I summon to the heavens my heartfelt thanks for this second anonymous chance. “Let me enjoy a stable life away from the limelight,” I plead fervently among tears of joy and resigned smiles. Yet, stifle that laughter. Know that these words, uttered in the innocence of a fresh start, would soon prove to be the prelude to an involuntary comedy. Because, it seems, even an extra can find themselves face to face with destiny. And so begins the most unexpected of journeys – one where the smallest of pawns may, somehow, change the game.

Planetary Defense Corps

In the year 2700, Earth is viciously invaded and attacked by an unknown force. Humanity—having long since become a spacefaring society—were equipped with the needed advanced weaponry, starships and high-tech planetary defenses. The catch was, we were only slightly more advanced technologically and had won the war with extreme causality to ourselves; Earth’s population was brought to the brink of annihilation. In the aftermath, most of Earth’s militaries, technology, industrial complexes, facilities, advanced heavy weaponry, war planes and battlecruisers were destroyed. Earth had practically gone dark and to its dismay, pockets of abandoned enemy forces still dominated sectors of the planet and continued as an active threat. Commanding Officers of fragmented armies and battalions around the globe quickly initiated the Planetary Defense Corps program—a contingency plan that utilizes a blend of all available military personnel and a mandatory civilian-based infantry who are then immediately trained in ground assault and guerrilla warfare tactics as Earth’s only formidable answer to all remaining enemy forces. The PDC’s objectives were simple: 1. To locate and eliminate all remaining enemy forces by any means necessary 2. To continuously and aggressively expand in number by mandatory recruitment of all able-bodied men and women to be trained and prepared to fight. Lt. Astro Dean Llewellyn, a once helpless civilian now 3-year battle worn PDC marine, leads his own infantry platoon through known and unknown hostile sectors in attempt to carry out the PDC’s objectives. What he discovers changes the fate of Humanity forever.

Dear sweet baby Jesus. I came here for another dark comedy and got a half-cooked grenade instead. Author, you should give a better warning to [Nightmare] readers. Dropping this on us is terrible, deplorable, and downright dastardly. I demand that you do a mass release daily as recompense. And don’t you dare think that you’re getting out of this. I expect hundreds of chapters every month. So don’t even think about giving up. Prioritize this novel over l Nightmare if you must. I’ll be reading every chapter to ensure you’re not cheating with poor content.

I feel like I’m reading about a weak character button mashing random cheat codes in GTA, and it’s unreasonably amusing. Each chapter becomes more ridiculous than the last despite the mc never changing. It’s like there’s a power restriction on the mc’s absurdity stat, and the author levels him up every few chapters. I’m shamelessly addicted. You’ll need to read past the mc walking out of the room to understand. After that, it feels like Alucard went on a *very enthusiastic* walk after being ordered not to intentionally kill people. Then there’s a brief pause to meet a character before the ceaseless nonsense returns. I’m curious just how far the author can keep pace. Without reaction chapters, this novel wouldn’t stop getting more extreme. I cannot recommend it enough.

Give this MC and his AI a bottle of water, a pack of chewing gum, and an eraser, and they’ll Macgyver a death solution for an enemy. I think people who like the mechanic genre with smart mcs would love this novel. He creates magic to come up with solutions, so there’s overlap there. However, he doesn’t create overpowered weapons. What he creates is exponentially more entertaining.

I was a bit confused at first, but by the tenth chapter the novel lives up to its description. There is a prologue in the first few chapters and the mc talks to an interrogator so it seems like it will be slow. But by the tenth chapter the interrogator practically disappears and it's shockingly fast paced. The mc makes magic and what he makes is humorous. It seems it'll only get more extreme in the future. I'm really enjoying it.  If you like smart anti-hero mcs with confidence, this character is prime. The fight scenes are ridiculous, and the characters are enjoyable. So I recommend it. The one downside is the interrogator. While she only shows up for a couple paragraphs every few chapters, I wish she wasn't in it. I'm sure many will agree.
