On My Mind

Adrian sat in his office; a frown etched on his facial features as he glared at the computer in front of him. Anyone who walked in at that moment would think he was concentrating on his work, but in actual fact he was simply just staring at the computer, his mind kept slipping away and he hated it. He hated the fact that he couldn't concentrate at work. He hated the fact that instead of working, he kept thinking of Georgina. He hated that he was been distracted. He hated that it was just one conversation he had with her, and he couldn't stop thinking about her.

He had left Ella's house yesterday because his parents wouldn't stop calling and yelling at him. His parents were terribly furious that he ditched Daphne at the party the other day.

Daphne.

She bore such a huge resemblance to Georgina with their similar black hair, the shape of their faces and even their eyes looked quite the same. Yet, somehow, he had thought of Georgina more times than he had thought of Daphne in the past 24 hours. In fact, he wasn't sure he had thought of Daphne at all, except when his mother called to berate him for his terrible behavior.

Speaking of his mother...….

His phone rang again, for like the tenth time in the past one hour.

Adrian glanced at the screen and nearly groaned out loud. It was his mother again. She had been calling too frequently today and he had ignored every single one of her calls. He wasn't sure he was in the mood to listen to her scream into his ears and remind him of how he was a terrible person for what he did to Daphne, which was funny because he didn't even feel terrible for it. Yes, he saw all those magazines and the news and the tweets of how he ditched Daphne, yet he couldn't bring it upon himself to feel guilty.

The phone stopped ringing, and after a while, Adrian sighed in relief, thinking that was over.

Until someone knocked on the door.

"Come in," Adrian said, his eyes still glued to the computer.

The door opened, and his personal assistant, Kim, walked in. "Excuse me, sir," she said in a trembling voice, "I…i… know you said you don't want anyone to bother you….but your mother has been calling for a while. She would like to speak to you."

Adrian glared at her so hard, she almost shrunk back into herself. From where he was seated, he could hear the faint shouts coming from the phone. He groaned. "Bring the phone."

Kim hurried over to him, still shaking as she handed the phone over to him. "Here….here, sir," she said, almost dropping the phone in the process.

Adrian glared at her and snatched the phone from her hand and placed it close to his ears. "Hey mum," he grumbled.

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" Anna King yelled over the phone, and he winced, pulling the phone away from his ear. When he placed it back, she was already in the middle of a long rant. ".... called your phone for hours and you refused to pick up! What is wrong with you?! Daphne said you are yet to apologize to her, and she hasn't even heard from you. Did I not tell you to go to her house and apologize in person?" Anna demanded.

Adrian sighed, rubbing his head with the tips of his fingers. "Mum, I'm really busy and I haven't been able to go see her yet," he said but in actual fact, he was trying to delay it. Why should he say sorry? He had never really had to say sorry to anyone before…. well, except his parents.

"Really busy?" his mother demanded. "Who do you think you are using that excuse for?"

Adrian let out another sighed. Damn it, he thought. She saw right through him. "Okay, I'm not sure I can go over there right now but…..but I'll send a gift with an apology note?" he said.

His mother paused, hesitating. "That's not good enough, but I'll take it. I still think you should apologize personally though. But don't worry, you will get a chance to do that tonight."

"Tonight?" Adrian questioned. "What's happening tonight?" A part of him was dreading the answer she was going to give.

"Oh, tonight, we are having dinner at the Rodriguez house," his mother informed him. "Isn't that exciting?"

It took all of his willpower to suppress his groan. "We are going to their house tonight? Why can't they come over to ours?" he demanded. Why did he have to uproot his entire being and alter his schedule just to have dinner at another person's house.

"We suggested that," his mother said, "but they said they'd be more comfortable in their house and since you already messed things up the first time, we decided that it would be better for us to go over there."

"Are you blaming me?"

"Yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing," she snapped at him. "Now, get to work on that gift you want to give Daphne. I'm going to call her and confirm if you really sent it," she threatened.

"Yes mum." Adrian rolled his eyes.

"Good." She hung up immediately.

Adrian sighed, as he raised his head, his gaze moving to that of his personal assistant, Kim. "What are you waiting for?" he demanded, a frown on his face.

She slowly raised her hand and pointed timidly at the phone. "The phone?" she squeaked in fright. Adrian had a very intimidating nature that frightened a lot of people, including those close to him.

"Right. Here," he handed the phone back to her.

She quickly grabbed and turned around, nearly sprinting towards the door.

"Wait, Kim," Adrian ordered.

She let out a groan under her breath and slowly turned to Adrian. "Yes, Mr. King?"

"I need to buy a gift for my… my fiancée," he said, muttering a curse word under his breath at the word, 'fiancée.' He doubted he would ever get used to that word. But if he couldn't get used to fiancée, how would he be able to cope with wife? He let out a very loud groan.

"Mr. King?" Kim called cautiously. She was only from seconds away from sprinting out through the door.

"Right, right." He cleared his throat. "You know Daphne Rodriguez?" he questioned, and she nodded. "Well, I need to get a gift for her right now. So, I'll leave that up to you to handle," he said in a tone of finality, turning back to his laptop.

Kim stood there, shuffling her feet. "Um…. excuse me sir," she cleared her throat. "Sir, what kind of gift?" She asked in a frightened whisper.

"I don't know Kim. Don't you know what girls like?" He questioned, irritated. He had never had to buy a gift for any of his flings before. This was all new to him and he wasn't even excited about it. He honestly didn't care.

"Girls like different things," Kim whispered. "What does she like?"

He glared at her. "I don't know, Kim, go figure it out and stop bothering me," he snapped at her.

"Right. Right, Okay sir." Without another word, she sprinted out of his office, aware of his glare on her retreating figure.

Adrian let out another groan again. He had been doing that frequently, especially since Daphne Rodriguez came into his life. Ugh. First, he had to publicly announce that he was engaged, now, he had to buy gifts. Ugh. He glared hard at his computer screen and in frustration, he slammed it close. He hated this, hated his life.

His phone rang, interrupting his thoughts. He glanced at the screen, hoping it wasn't his mother. Thankfully, it was Ella. So, he grabbed it and answered the call. "Hello," he grumbled.

"I swear whenever I call you, you never sound happy," Ella said, amused.

"What do you want?" he demanded. He was still pissed off about the whole Daphne situation.

"Your mum called m earlier today," Ella informed him. "She was really angry that I allowed you follow me home."

"She called me too," He answered with a long sigh. His mother could be such a pain in the ass sometimes.

"So, have you spoken to your fiancée yet?" Ella asked.

"No but I'm seeing her tonight," Adrian answered. As he spoke to Ella, the image of Georgina sitting on the couch and smiling at him flashed through his mind again and he groaned. 'Ask about her, ask about her," his mind chanted. He opened his mouth to ask but what came out was, "How is Joe and Phyna?"

"Oh, they are fine. They are in school right now," Ella answered.

"What about you? Aren't you at work?"

"No, i….i took a leave of absence. I've been really stressed out lately. A lot of things have been going on," Ella answered, her voice small and tired. "I thought I would take a break," she said.

"I hope you are okay, though."

"Yeah, I'm fine," she answered. "Anyway, I just called to check up on you and to know if your mum is still as mad at you as she is with me."

"Oh, she definitely is," Adrian answered. "Greet Joe and Phyna for me."

"Yeah, I will."

And Georgina, Adrian wanted to say but before he could get out another word, the phone beeped, signaling that Ella had hung up. Adrian sighed and slid his phone unto the table. What was wrong with him? Why was he fucking acting like this?
