Scorched Earth, Splintered Vows
During a wildfire, a massive, burning branch impaled me from behind, pinning me to the scorched earth just as I pushed my assistant, Gina, out of the way.
After the fire subsided, my husband, Dean, arrived with his team.
But he ignored me, lying in a pool of my own blood, and rushed straight to Gina, whose only injury was a face smudged with soot.
He held her tightly, then turned and glared at me with a coldness I had never seen before.
"You're just going to lie there and watch? Get over here and help!"
I trembled, every word a fresh agony in my torn lungs.
"Dean, a branch... it went through my back. Help me."
But Gina was sobbing in his arms, screaming that I was jealous of her and had deliberately pushed her toward the flames.
Dean's face twisted with rage. He called me selfish and vicious.
A firefighter who had examined me yelled at him, "Roth, that branch might have hit her spine! She could be paralyzed!"
But Dean shoved him away. "Save her? Let her get up herself! Clara, this is a rescue mission. If you want to put on a show, save it for home. I'll play along all you want then."
"Gina's hurt. There's one ambulance, and she's taking it. You can find your own way out."
He turned his back without a second glance, leaving me to die in the smoldering ruins of the woods.
