refund of morals

On the Genealogy of Morality: A Polemic (Genealogy of Morals) is an 1887 book by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It consists of a preface and three interrelated essays that expand and follow through on concepts Nietzsche sketched out in Beyond Good and Evil (1886). The three trace episodes in the evolution of moral concepts with a view to confronting "moral prejudices", specifically those of Christianity and Judaism. Some Nietzsche scholars consider Genealogy to be a work of sustained brilliance and power as well as his masterpiece. Since its publication, it has influenced many authors and philosophers. In the "First Treatise", Nietzsche demonstrates that the two opposite pairs "good/evil" and "good/bad" have very different origins, and that the word "good" itself came to represent two opposed meanings. In the "good/bad" distinction, "good" is synonymous with nobility and everything which is powerful and life-asserting; in the "good/evil" distinction, which Nietzsche calls "slave morality", the meaning of "good" is made the antithesis of the original aristocratic "good", which itself is re-labelled "evil". This inversion of values develops out of the resentment of the powerful by the weak. In the "Second Treatise" Nietzsche advances his thesis that the origin of the institution of punishment is in a straightforward (pre-moral) creditor/debtor relationship. Man relies on the apparatus of forgetfulness in order not to become bogged down in the past. This forgetfulness is, according to Nietzsche, an active "faculty of repression", not mere inertia or absentmindedness. Man needs to develop an active faculty to work in opposition to this, so promises necessary for exercising control over the future can be made: this is memory. Nietzsche's purpose in the "Third Treatise" is "to bring to light, not what ideal has done, but simply what it means; what it indicates; what lies hidden behind it, beneath it, in it; of what it is the provisional, indistinct expression, overlaid with question marks and misunderstandings" (§23). As Nietzsche tells us in the Preface, the Third Treatise is a commentary on the aphorism prefixed to it. Textual studies have shown that this aphorism consists of §1 of the Treatise (not the epigraph to the Treatise, which is a quotation from Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra). This opening aphorism confronts us with the multiplicity of meanings that the ascetic ideal has for different groups: (a) artists, (b) philosophers, (c) women, (d) physiological casualties, (e) priests, and (f) saints. The ascetic ideal, we may thus surmise, means very little in itself, other than as a compensation for humanity's need to have some goal or other. As Nietzsche puts it, man "will rather will nothingness than not will".

[The Hook] Ten years of blood. Ten years of sacrifice. I was Han-Seol, the "Light of the North," the Hero who ended the Great Demon War. I gave my youth, my health, and my soul to save a humanity that rewarded me with a blade between my ribs. As my blood pooled on the marble floor of the palace, the Holy System—the "God" I served—spoke its final chilling words: [Mission Complete. Hero Utility: 0%. Discarding Host.] [The Twist] I expected eternal darkness. Instead, I woke up to the smell of trash and the sound of a flickering neon sign. I was back. Ten years in the past. But I wasn’t the Hero anymore. I had been reincarnated into the body of Drake Vance, a bottom-tier street thug with zero talent, zero money, and a death sentence hanging over his head. In my previous life, Drake was the first "minor villain" I had ever killed. Now, I was living in his skin, destined to be the first stepping stone for my former self. [The System Reveal] But something went wrong during the soul-transfer. The Holy System glitched, and in its place, a new, golden interface appeared: [The Malfunction Refund System has Initialized!] [Guiding Principle: Failure is the Mother of Profit.] Unlike the Hero System that demanded perfection, this system rewarded failure. Attempted to steal a legendary artifact and got caught? [Refund: 100x Stealth and Agility!] Tried to cast a spell and it fizzled out? [Refund: 100x Mana Capacity and Potency!] Failed to kill a target? [Refund: 100x Critical Damage Multiplier!] [The Promise] The "Hero" Han-Seol is still out there, gathering his party and preparing to save a world that will eventually betray him. He thinks he’s the protagonist of this story. He’s wrong. I know every secret dungeon, every legendary item location, and every betrayal that is yet to happen. I will fail my way to the top, collecting "Refunds" until I am so powerful that the heavens themselves cannot discard me again. If being a Hero meant dying for nothing, then I’ll be the Villain who takes everything. "I’m not here to save the world this time. I’m here to make it pay the interest."

"A world where morals are dead, masters are nonexistent, and the worthy have everything to claim." Centuries ago, humanity found their 'gods.' They tore down the borders, united the nations, and paved the way for a new, unified civilization. It was supposed to be a golden age. It was supposed to be peace. They were wrong. The structures built for these 'gods'—the Architects of our reality—were never meant to protect us. They were bars for a cage. Now, the world is a sterile, borderless slaughterhouse where humanity is nothing more than pawns for the entities above. Riu, an un-chosen boy at the bottom of the food chain, was never meant to see the truth. But when the world itself reveals the rotting foundation of their reality, Riu decides he is finished playing the victim. In a world without morals and no masters, the only thing that matters is power. Join Riu as he defies the heavens, dismantles the cage, and climbs the wreckage of a broken world to become a god-defying entity. The hell was just a place. The mayhem starts now.
