heartless leeches
Small leeches
Leeches were the general term for the class Arachnida of the Annelida. There were more than 600 species of leeches in 2 subclasses, 4 orders, 10 families known worldwide, and 93 species of leeches in 36 genuses in China. Small leeches might not have reached mature size during their growth and development. Their forms also had typical characteristics of leeches, such as no seta on the surface of the body, suction cups at the front and back ends, flat back and abdomen, narrow front end, leaf-like or worm-like body, and 34 somites. In the field of medicine, leeches, regardless of their size, had the effects of breaking blood, clearing meridians, dispelling blood stasis, dispelling diseases, dissolving blood, etc. Their saliva contained prostaglandins, vasodilators, etc., which could suppress Platelet agelation and anti-Arteriostasis. The hirudin extracted from leeches was a strong, effective and safe hemostatic agent among natural substances. However, it should be noted that leeches are slightly toxic and should not be used in pregnant women and those with menorrhagia. Those with weak constitution, deficiency of the spleen and stomach, as well as those with bleeding tendency or those who are using hemostatic drugs should be used with caution or avoided.

Leeches attack people
When leeches attacked people, they would first firmly attach themselves to the skin with suction cups, and then use their jaws to bite the skin into a triangle to suck blood. When sucking blood, their glands would secrete histamine-like substances that expanded blood vessels, causing the wound to bleed and produce a rash.
When people were bitten by leeches, they generally did not feel pain or only itch until the leeches left or were removed after sucking blood. Triangular wounds could be seen on the local skin, and red spots or wheals could appear on the surrounding skin. In serious cases, blisters and necroses could appear. Occasionally, there would be a general reaction or allergic shock. Smaller leeches can sometimes drill into the uterus and cause bleeding. They can also invade the uterus and bladder to cause dysuria or hematuria. When washing your face in the pond, swimming or drinking raw water, leeches can drill into the nasal cavity and throat, causing intermittent nasal obstruction, epistax, nasal pain, runny nose and nasal squirming.
After the leech is bitten, the leech needs to be taken out. Antibiotic ointment can be applied externally to the bitten area to prevent secondary infection. At the same time, it should be noted that leeches can transmit AIDS and should be taken seriously. However, leech bites can usually be cured after treatment.
