lanna KingdomThe Lanna Dynasty was a kingdom that once ruled the northern part of Thailand in the history of Thailand. It was also the earliest powerful regime in Thailand. In the 13th century, King Maung Rai established his capital in Chiangmai, which later became the capital of the Lannatai Kingdom for more than 700 years.
In the early years of the Lanna Dynasty (1296 - 1355), the King of Menglai gathered the city-states in the Guo River Valley to form the Sinharawa Empire. Later, he annexed the city-states in the areas of Qinglai and Chiangmai to establish the Lanna Kingdom. During the golden age of the Lanna Kingdom (1354 - 1525), it reached its peak under the rule of King Gna, King Diluola, and King Mengjiao. During this period, there were diplomatic missions from the Sukhothai Kingdom requesting to spread Buddhism. Nanben became an important Buddhist center. The Lanna Kingdom also expanded its influence to some cities in the north and went to war with the big city kingdom.
The Lanna Kingdom began to decline after the reign of Maung Kogao (1525 - 1538). In 1558, it was conquered by the Toungoo Dynasty of Myanmar and became its vassal state for more than 200 years. In 1774, the towns of Lanna rebelled under the leadership of the city lord of Nanbang, Jia Weila, to resist the rule of Myanmar and join the Siamese army. Lanna became a vassal state of the Siamese Kingdom. During the reign of King Rama V Chulalongkorn the Great, the Lanna Kingdom was annexed by the Kingdom of Siam in 1899, and the title was revoked. After the administrative system was reformed, the original region continued to this day.
As Lanna bordered Myanmar in the north and Yunnan Province of China in the northeast across the province of Chiangrai, a variety of foreign cultures were intertwined here. Moreover, due to the inconvenient transportation between the mountains and the hills, it formed a unique style in northern Thailand, which was very different from central Thailand. Its architectural style was reflected in the towering multi-eaves, mountain-like roofs, fish-scale glass tiles, teak buildings, wood carvings, murals, gold foil, and other decorative details. The buildings reflected the local culture, history, aesthetics, and religious beliefs. Lanna meant "the kingdom of millions of rice fields" in Thai. Rice had a special meaning to Chiangmai. Among the rice terraces and tropical rainforests, there were typical teak buildings in northern Thailand.
