I was squinting at my laptop screen, almost getting frustrated by the long-ass application form that already felt more like an interview with Microsoft when my phone rang loudly, startling me. Since when? I thought my phone was on vibration. I really don't know why I keep giving these kids my phone to play with when all they do is mess with my settings. Leaning back, I glanced at the screen and became even more annoyed when I saw who was calling. Kenneth. I picked up but stayed silent. Hello? Helloooo?" What? I responded harshly, jeering my eyes as if he could see me. He went quiet. He never quite knew how to handle me like this How were you able to roll out of bed and start your day without checking up on me first? I demanded. I even sent you a good morning text, and all I got was an I'll call you soon.' That was it. Babe, you know I'm not usually like that, he said quickly. My boss called me out of my sleep with a sense of urgency. I literally jumped out of bed and went straight to the office. "When did that start? I knew I'd talk to you during lunch, like I'm doing right now. But I'm sorry, okay? To me, those are just excuses. That's how it starts. It won't happen again. So today could've been avoided then? Babe, we're handling a litigation at work, and my boss needed some backup documents for court that were in my possession. I was buttoning my shirt while driving. I didn't even take a bath—just brushed my teeth and rushed out. I had no choice. At that point, I realized I was probably being spoiled. It's okay, I sighed. I'm actually acting out right now. I was just worried because this isn't your usual routine. Or because you miss me. Who misses you? You, of course, he said with a chuckle. Fine. I miss you. And this isn't your usual routine. Period. All I heard was i miss you. Suit yourself. Anyway, where are you? I'm at the canteen, and the food is disgusting by the way. All I can think about is your peppered goat meat sauce with hot white rice and very ripe plantains. I couldn't help smiling. Well, I actually planned to come over later. I need some peace and quiet to finish this application before the deadline tonight. So... I might just make it for you. Did you hear that? Hear what? My spoon dropping. I burst out laughter Oh, please. Don't make me laugh. I'm running back to the office to finish up and then sprint straight to you. Immediately, I switched the call to video. You're not coming for me. You're coming for the food. I'm coming for you and the food. I stared at him through the screen, trying to look offended. He grinned. Okay, you're both my delicious, and I love you equally. That did it. I laughed so hard I almost dropped my phone. Then he interrupted. Babe, when I get home, there's something I'd like us to discuss. My face turned serious. What about? Give me a hint If I give you a hint, that will be telling you Just know it's about us and it’s important okay A knot formed in my stomach Okay.
