Bian Que studied medicine from Changsang Jun when he was young. He was good at using observation, listening, questioning and feeling (especially pulse diagnosis and observation) to diagnose diseases. He was proficient in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pedigrees, five senses and other subjects. He used acupuncture, acupuncture, massage, soup, hot iron and other methods to treat diseases, and was respected as the ancestor of medicine. It is said that he once saved the prince of Guo State. The tomb is located in the east of Qinghua Town, Yongji City today.
More than 900 bamboo slips containing medical content were unearthed from the Han Tomb at Laoguan Mountain in Tianhui Town, Chengdu. Experts identified them as Bian Que's medical books. Although these medical books had been soaked in water for more than 2000 years and were severely damaged and scattered, after more than ten years of repair, restoration, and research, 930 medical slips with more than 20,000 words of content were sorted out. They were sorted into eight medical books, including "Pulse Book·Shang Jing" and "Pulse Book·Xia Jing". The contents covered the medical knowledge fields of meridians, viscera, acupuncture, and herbal soup. It was the first time to systematically discuss the principle of pulse diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine, and it was the first time to create a precedent for observing, listening, asking, and treating diseases. It was the largest theoretical and practical work of Chinese medicine in the same historical period. Its diagnosis techniques, conclusions, corresponding treatments, and prescriptions were still widely circulated in later generations.
