In autumn and winter, animals have several changes. Firstly, regarding migration. Many animals, especially birds, migrate to warmer regions with more abundant food as winter approaches and food becomes scarce in their original habitats. For example, some birds fly south to escape the cold and find enough food to survive the harsh winter months. Sea turtles also migrate long distances to specific beaches for laying eggs, which is related to reproduction. Secondly, in terms of activity time and pattern. Some animals that are usually active during the day may change their behavior. For instance, the polar bear, which is mainly active during the day in other seasons, may become more nocturnal in winter in the Arctic where the days are short and nights are long. It uses moonlight and snow light to hunt for seals. Also, some animals enter special states. For example, the hedgehog eats a lot in autumn to store fat and then enters hibernation in winter. It reduces its body temperature, heart rate and breathing rate in its nest, and can survive the whole winter without food and water. In addition, animals' feeding and digestion also change. Squirrels, which are omnivorous in spring and summer, eat various plants and insects, but in autumn, they mainly eat nuts and bury the extra nuts underground as winter reserves. Reindeer, which eat fresh grass in summer, can only eat moss and lichens in winter. To adapt to this, reindeer increase the size and capacity of the fourth part of their stomach (the rumen) in winter. Read more exciting novels for free
