The author of the case was the Dutch sinologist, diplomat, and novelist, Gulik van Gulik. From 1950 to 1967, he wrote a series of detective novels in English, The Great Tang Di Gong Case. This work featured Di Renjie, the prime minister of the Tang Dynasty in China, and described his legendary experience of solving cases and eliminating evils with the people as an official in the state, county and Kyoto. Through his own understanding of the language, Gao Luopei re-created the role of the Chinese detective, Di Renjie. After the novel was published, it became popular throughout the Western world and was translated into many foreign languages.
