Battosai was a title given to the male protagonist, Kenshin Shimura, in Ronin Kenshin.
Kimura Kenshin's original name was Shinta Kimura. His parents died when he was young. After being kidnapped by human traffickers, he was rescued by Hiko Seijurou and accepted as his disciple. He was renamed Kimura Kenshin. He used to be an executioner and was known as the Battosai Executioner. His school was called the Flying Sword Style, and his master was Hiko Seijuuro, the 14th successor of this school.
In the last years of the shogunate, Kenshin had committed many acts of murder. However, after the Meiji Restoration, he swore not to kill again and began a wandering life. Kenshin's character was based on Kawakami Hikensai, who was known as one of the four executioners of Edo, and was active from the end of the Bakushi era to the early Meiji era. Some of the characteristics of Kawakami Hikensai were reflected in Kenshin, such as the characteristics of swordsmanship, personality, and so on. However, Kenshin had been transformed into a brand new character, with more personalities and enigmatic colors.
