देवसागर—जहाँ सूरज की किरणें पानी की सतह से टकराकर नीचे बसे' जल- नगरी' महाद्वीप पर नीली रोशनी बिखेरती हैं. कुछ महीने पहले तक, इसी नगरी की' एलिमेंटल अकादमी' में देव के नाम का डंका बजता था. जब वह हाथ उठाता, तो समुद्र की लहरें उसके इशारे पर नाचती थीं. पर आज? आज वह उसी अकादमी के किनारे बैठा एक पत्थर पानी में फेंक रहा था. उसकी जादुई शक्ति (Mana) पूरी तरह खत्म हो चुकी थी. पीछे से कुछ लडकों के हंसने की आवाज आई. देखो, देखो! देवसागर का' तूफान' अब एक' नन्हा बुलबुला' भी नहीं बना सकता, एक लडका फुसफुसाया. गाँव के बडे- बुजुर्ग भी वहां से गुजरते हुए अफसोस भरी नजरों से उसे देख रहे थे, बेचारा. कल तक जो हमें अपनी ताकत से डराता था, आज खुद अपनी साये से डर रहा है। देव ने मुट्ठियाँ भींच लीं. उसे समझ आ गया कि दुनिया उगते सूरज को सलाम करती है. जब मेरे पास शक्ति थी, तो ये लोग मेरे तलवे चाटते थे. आज मैं गिर गया हूँ, तो सब तमाशा देख रहे हैं। तभी अचानक, पीछे से एक गीला जूता देव के सिर पर आकर लगा. आउच! यह क्या है? देव चिल्लाया. सामने जोया खडी थी, एक अजीब सा जादुई डंडा पकडे हुए. ओह! Sorry देव. मैं' उडने वाली चप्पल' का जादू ट्राई कर रही थी, पर लगता है मेरा जूता तुझे ज्यादा प्यार करता है, जोया ने दांत दिखाते हुए कहा. देव ने चिढते हुए कहा, जोया, जाओ यहाँ से. मैं अकेले रहना चाहता हूँ। जोया पास आकर बैठ गई और एक टेढा- मेढा चेहरा बनाकर बोली, अकेले रहकर क्या करोगे? इस पत्थर से शादी? वैसे भी, तुम अब बिना जादू के इतने' नॉर्मल' लग रहे हो कि मुझे डर है कहीं मछलियाँ तुम्हें अपना खाना न समझ लें! देव के चेहरे पर हल्की सी मुस्कान आ गई. जोया ही एक ऐसी थी जो उसे' बेचारा' नहीं समझती थी.
