On February 12, 2013, the International Olympic Committee decided to remove wrestling from the existing 26 major events of the Olympic Games. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, golf was listed as an Olympic event.
The 2024 Paris Olympics retained the classic events such as track and field, swimming, basketball, and football, but added rock climbing, break-dance skateboarding, and surfing. The number of events included in some of the events were as follows: baseball included one event, weightlifting included fifteen events, sailing included eleven events, fencing included ten events, basketball included two events, softball included one event, equestrian included three events and six events, volleyball included two events and four events, canoeing included two events and sixteen events, ice skating included four events, field lacrosse included two events, and boxing included eleven events. Judo consisted of fourteen events, shooting consisted of fifteen events, archery consisted of four events, handball consisted of two events, wrestling consisted of two sub-events and eighteen events, taekwondo consisted of eight events, gymnastics consisted of three sub-events and eighteen events, track and field consisted of forty-seven events, triathlon consisted of two events, tennis consisted of four events, modern Pentathlon consisted of two events, swimming consisted of four sub-events and forty-six events, and volleyball consisted of five events. Cycling had three sub-categories and eighteen sub-categories; football had two sub-categories; rock climbing had three sub-categories; surfing had two sub-categories; skateboarding had two sub-categories and two sub-categories; and breakdancing had two sub-categories.
