One common theme is sacrifice. In many stories, lovers are willing to sacrifice their own interests for the sake of their beloved. For example, in 'Romeo and Juliet', they are willing to risk their lives for their love.

Overcoming obstacles is a big theme too. There could be parental disapproval, academic pressure, or competition from other students. High school love stories often show how the couple tries to overcome these difficulties to be together. For instance, they might study hard to prove to their parents that love doesn't mean neglecting studies, or they might face up to a rival who also has feelings for one of them.

The metaphysics of the Wei and Jin Dynasties used the thoughts of Laozi and Zhuangzi as the framework to reconcile nature and Confucianism, and to explore the basis for the existence of all things in the world. It originated from the decline of Confucianism in the Han Dynasty and the evolution and development of Taoism and Huanglao's learning. It was the product of the idle talk at the end of the Han Dynasty and the beginning of the Wei Dynasty. It could be called metaphysics and prevailed from the Wei, Jin, and Sui Dynasties. During the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties, metaphysics was prevalent among the scholar-bureaucrats, discussing abstract philosophy such as origin and end, existence and non-existence, and ethics and nature. In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Wang Dao, Yu Liang, and other famous scholars corrected their mistakes and promoted the idea of "Confucianism is nature". The rulers of the Xiao Liang royal family advocated metaphysics as the core of the academic culture at that time. In the Northern Dynasty, the culture of metaphysics was impacted but did not completely disappear. In the early Tang Dynasty, those who valued metaphysics achieved a breakthrough in Taoist philosophy. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty explained "Taoism is nature" with "Miao Ben" and ended the debate between Buddhism and Taoism. In modern times, metaphysics was also used to refer to some phenomena or laws that were difficult to explain with science, such as some statements about luck and fortune, but these lacked scientific basis.
