In Sicily, destiny passes by when you are a child, often announced by a dream. A dream that must be told, precisely, to your mother, before the day breaks and the first light of dawn erases its memory. If the dream is good, your mother will give you a piece of bread to eat immediately, to make that dream come true. If the dream is bad, your mother will make you spit on the ground three times, to dispel the ominous premonition. Belinda's destiny announced itself one day when she was just a child. She had not yet learned to read or write, yet she began to write poems, to create rhymes. They were very long poems, full of images and words that she herself struggled to understand. She wrote them on every piece of paper she found: on the back of receipts, on old school notebooks. She drew shapes and symbols that only she could decipher. She was a singular child, she had a strong personality and spoke a lot, "tutto d'un fiato" (all in one breath), and her hair, red like fire, reflected her fiery and impulsive character. But she was also a dreamer and loved to look at the stars at night and lie down in the grass to watch the clouds chasing each other in the sky, imagining they were animals or people. One day she showed her poems to her mother, Caterina. Her mother, usually busy with a thousand chores, stopped to listen to her. Caterina was a practical and rational woman, not at all inclined to listen to dreams or strange stories. She was always focused on facts, on work, on caring for her family and her two children. She spent her days between the sewing machine, creating beautiful clothes, and the kitchen, where she prepared delicious dishes for everyone. Yet, that day, she listened to Belinda intently, with a serious face. Perhaps she sensed in her daughter's poems the same power, the same "current" that flowed within her own mother, Belinda's grandmother, the "mavara" (witch) who guarded the ancient secrets of the earth. Caterina listened to the words, then looked at her daughter and said: “A mamma non si cunta u distinu!” (You don't tell destiny to Mom!). She looked at Belinda with eyes full of fear, then hugged her tightly and told her not to show those papers to anyone, and above all, not to tell anyone what she felt, not even her best friend. Not even her father, who, if he had found out, would have made a scene and then, like the good Christian he was, would have taken her to exorcise the devil. Belinda had not understood much, but she knew that those words of her mother were a warning, a sign that she should hide those secrets well, far from the eyes of others. And so she did. For many years, Belinda kept those poems, those images, those symbols, locked away in her heart, silencing that inner voice, that powerful call that tried to emerge from her soul, like a river in flood. She tried to live a normal life, a life like that of other girls, but that force, that "current," that invisible river, continued to flow within her. It was destiny, and destiny cannot be stopped.

Lilith Verrlois thought of how unlucky she was all of her life. Her mother died giving birth to her, her father committing infidelity even before she was born, being rumored as a witch for reacting different from others when a classmate departed to the other side, her grandma dying suddenly. It shocked her how life can give her lots of lemons-- no! actually it's the whole lemon tree! In the path of finding motivations to live and enjoy her life, she met with a mysterious boy whom you can't figure out with just one glance if he's mad or just kidding around. The accidental meet up one night became continuous and she may have already found that one string to hold on to keep on moving, to keep on living. As their friendship grows, they started to strangely see each other on the same yellow light, under the very same lemon tree that life throws you at. A sudden realization hits them both, two depressed people trying to find comfort on each other in a path of healing. Will they succeed or fall and lose grasp of that string? "I never knew that having someone to lean on and someone who had the same fate will bring this much comfort and peace that my soul longed for in ages."

“IF life gives you lemons, well then, you’re god.” At least that’s what I wrote in my middle school diary, hoping it would be some kind of life mantra. Fast forward 15 years, and apparently, my childish optimism is the least of my worries. I’m now trapped in the novel I wrote as a kid. And no, I didn’t dream this up. There’s no way I imagined the high school drama, the ridiculous fantasy world, and—most importantly—the absurdly cliché plotline of some random teenager becoming a hero by… well, not being an idiot. But here I am. Caught between pages, awkwardly stuck in the world of my imagination where I’m supposed to be a minor character who dies in chapter three. Yeah. Real great, right? And here’s the kicker: It’s not like life (or the "god" of this world, which, let’s be honest, feels a lot like life at this point) is giving me some great power or destiny. No, no, no. Life’s throwing the equivalent of lemons at me, and I have no idea how to make lemonade. I mean, seriously? This world was supposed to be an adventure, full of magic, mythical creatures, and an epic storyline. But instead, I'm stuck here watching the “real” protagonist—who’s probably off saving the world—while I try to figure out how to not get killed by a random monster in the middle of a forest. Is this my punishment for writing a half-baked novel as a kid? Probably. But whatever it is, I’m going to have to deal with it. There’s just one problem—if I want to survive this insane mess, I need to rewrite my own fate. And rewriting this world is a hell of a lot harder than I thought. Can I survive in a story where I’m not supposed to exist? And more importantly—what if I can change the plot entirely?
