He woke in the body of the weakest diver on a starving raft, named last at the water-line, with a little sister who is not the one he lost but looks at him the very same way, and only the weakest graft a diver can carry: gills, the bare minimum needed to breathe below. Fortunately, Kell did not come back alone. In this world, power is eaten. Go down into the black, kill a beast and swallow its living organ while it is still warm. Its adaptation grafts into your flesh: eyes that read darkness, hide that bears crushing pressure, glands that cast lightning through water, organs that speak in echoes. One graft is only the beginning. A soul can grow new chambers for more, but each chamber must be earned through years of evolution, pressure and survival in deeper water.
