Well, 'Athira' is a great Malayalam horror novel. It's really good at creating a sense of dread. You know, like you're waiting for something bad to happen all the time while reading.

Many authors contribute to the pool of best Malayalam stories. Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai is famous for his stories that depict the rural life in Kerala. His works give a detailed and realistic view of the lives of the common people. Also, O. V. Vijayan has written some remarkable stories with a touch of magic realism.

Character - driven plots are common. The authors focus on developing complex characters with their own desires, flaws, and dreams. Take 'Aadujeevitham' where the main character Najeeb's journey is shaped by his own determination as well as the external circumstances he faces in a foreign land. These novels also tend to be very descriptive, painting vivid pictures of the settings, be it the bustling markets, the serene backwaters, or the arid deserts in the case of novels with overseas settings like 'Aadujeevitham'.

One of the best Malayalam novels is 'Chemmeen' by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. It beautifully portrays the life of fishermen and the complex relationships in a coastal village. Another great one is 'Aadujeevitham' by Benyamin. It tells the story of an immigrant's struggles in a foreign land, very poignant and thought - provoking.

I'm not aware of many Malayalam movies specifically with gay couple stories as it is still a relatively new concept in the Malayalam film industry. However, as the industry is evolving, there may be some independent or experimental films in the future that might explore such themes.
