Soft Light, Soft Us
In the quiet, autumnal halls of Willow Creek University, two worlds collide—one of soft brushstrokes and quiet vulnerability, the other of bouncing basketballs and unapologetic confidence. Elowen Reed, a shy studio art major, finds solace in her sketchbook, hiding her true self and her growing realization of her sexuality from all but a few. Riley Carter, a star basketball player with a warm heart and a fearless spirit, has long embraced her identity but carries the weight of others’ expectations, even from her well-meaning family.
Their fateful meeting—an accidental collision outside the Fine Arts Building, where Riley spills Elowen’s coffee and ruins her sketch—sparks a connection neither anticipated. What begins as a coffee date to make amends blooms into a tender, secret romance: stolen kisses outside dorm rooms, late nights at a cozy downtown diner, quiet afternoons spent with Elowen painting and Riley studying, two souls finding comfort in each other’s presence. Elowen, once afraid to be seen, starts to believe she can be her true self with Riley; Riley, used to being in the spotlight, discovers a peace in Elowen’s quiet warmth that she’s never known.
But their love is not without storm. Secrets have a way of surfacing, and a photo of them holding hands ignites campus gossip, forcing them to confront whispers and judgment. Elowen’s deeply religious parents, unannounced and armed with rumors from her aunt, confront her about her relationship with Riley, giving her an ultimatum: end things with Riley, or lose their financial support and love. As Elowen grapples with fear, self-doubt, and the pain of disappointing her family, the distance between her and Riley grows—tested by Elowen’s hesitation to be open and Riley’s fear of losing the girl she loves.
Soft Light, Soft Us is a heartfelt exploration of love, identity, and courage—of two young women learning to navigate the complexities of being queer in a world that often demands conformity, of choosing love over fear, and of finding that the softest connections can withstand the hardest storms. It is a story of sweetness and struggle, of vulnerability and strength, and of two hearts learning to shine together, even when the light feels dim.
