Ballad of the first Arachne
Spiders are pretty scary and disgusting creatures. They don't make me scream in terror, just a slight, nagging unease. I know that most of them can't harm me in any significant way, but still.
I've read a lot of books about spiders. And to be honest, most of them are trash. No offense to the authors. They are introduced into the scene to evoke a conditioned reflex in the reader disgust, loathing, and are immediately forgotten as unnecessary props. They have no depth of their own. They have no story. They are simply scary images that are meant to scare and disappear.
In my opinion, this is a significant oversight. Creatures that have been around for so long, that have survived through eras and cataclysms, that have a complex behavior pattern and an almost mystical ability to wait they deserve more than just a one-paragraph scarecrow. They can be symbols, mirrors, and harbingers. But to convey that, you need to give them meaning. You need to make them a part of history. I would like to fix that or at least try to.
