One of my first - day - of - school teacher stories is when I was a new teacher. I walked into the classroom full of nervous energy. There was a little boy sitting in the corner looking really shy. I made it a point to talk to him first. I asked his name and he mumbled it so quietly. But as the day went on, I noticed he was really interested in the books on the shelf. So I picked one and started reading it aloud. By the end of the day, he was smiling and more open. It was a great start to building a connection with a student.
