Harry tried to climb onto the platform to check, but Lupin held him tight and told him Sirius was dead. In the movie, it was directly stated that Bella used a death curse on Sirius (Avada Kedavra, green) and hit him. However, the first curse Bella used in the book was red, so it was not a death curse.
