FAR AWAY: BEYOND THE REEF

FAR AWAY: BEYOND THE REEF

For centuries, the scattered islands of Kiribati have been bound together not by the tools of man, but by the tides of fear. The ocean here gives life, but it also takes it away—silently and without warning. The locals speak of Te Anti—monstrosities from the deep that rise to claim the living. Sixteen-year-old Tawi carries the weight of this history in his bones. Sensitive and fiercely spirited, he struggles to find his footing in a world constantly on the edge of grief. To prepare for the unthinkable, Tawi trains in the Buubura Karekare—ancient, communal games designed to sharpen the body and spirit. He isn’t alone; he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with a brotherhood of young warriors: Taake, Bwene, Tabuto, and Kauro. But the ocean is changing. The disappearances are no longer random tragedies—they are strategic strikes. Realizing their enemy is executing a coordinated invasion, Tawi and his rivals must dissolve their petty differences. They have to master the brutality of the games not for glory, but for survival, before the rising tide swallows their people forever. THE DRUA HAS MOVED WEST To the watchers of Banaba: The mist at the river mouth has grown too thick. The journey of Tolu to Naisariti is continuing in clearer waters. I am moving the logs of this voyage to a new harbor. If you wish to see the 'Electric Turquoise' and the weight of the expanse of the story, look for 'FAR AWAY' by [Te-One-Karawa] on the 'Royal' path. I’ll be waiting at the shore. The river remains, but the ocean is calling.

The Coral diviner

The Coral diviner

Benin City, 1895. Adesuwa Eghosa reads cowries in the market square, inheriting both her mother's gift and her mother's disgrace. Iyeman Eghosa was cast out of the palace's inner court fifteen years ago for reasons no one would ever explain. When master bronze-caster Idehen is found dead among his molds with the Ivie-Oba, the Oba's sacred coral regalia, shattered beside him, the palace has one moon to solve it: the anniversary rites are coming, and a British trade delegation is already asking pointed questions about what treasures Benin still holds. Captain Osaretin Ediae, the Iyase's son, gets six days of nothing. At the chief priest's insistence and over Osaretin's open scepticism. Adesuwa is brought into the workshop, where she reads what his evidence can't: no fear in the room, only argument. Idehen knew his killer, and the killer left through a door only an insider would use. Their investigation uncovers not a robbery but a year-long haemorrhage: fourteen treasury "restoration orders" in eleven months, all bearing the seal of Chief Iyoha, the Keeper of the Treasury, and the uncle who raised Osaretin after his mother's death. Idehen had been quietly weighing pieces, suspecting substitutions, and was due to bring it to the Oba directly the morning after he died. At the far end of the chain sits Aldous Kerr, a British trade agent buying palace antiquities through a river trader. As Adesuwa and Osaretin fall for each other across an unbridgeable rank divide, the palace closes ranks: a fifteen-year-old apprentice is framed, Adesuwa is dragged before a hostile priestly council, and a coral bead is left on her mother's divining cloth as a warning. Osaretin stakes his standing before the full court to defend her, and they finish the case as outsiders working the alleys instead of the offices intercepting Iyoha's next shipment on the river with his own ledger inside. Iyoha doesn't deny it. He argues he was selling what the British would seize anyway, building a fund to outlast an invasion he sees coming and admits he never intended to kill Idehen, only to reason with him. He's exiled, stripped of title. The coral is repaired with bronze beads where real coral couldn't be recovered, and the rites proceed unblemished before the delegation. Eleven pieces are already gone forever, bound for glass cases abroad. Adesuwa accepts a court appointment as consultant to the priesthood on condition she keeps her market stall and she and Osaretin end the book together, with a foreign ship still at anchor in the harbour.

Just take care of the kids, and separate rooms are fine? The others may pass, but she won't. Every day is a battle of wits with the two kids. Life is eventful, she gets a salary every month, and the boss is never home. Absolutely perfect. Except... wasn't this big shot supposed to be infertile? Then why does he keep strutting around naked in front of her? She has professional ethics. She won't be seduced by a good body. Hmph. Men only slow down her sword swing. Lu Feng grits his teeth at Fu Xiaoxiao, who remains completely unmoved by his countless attempts to seduce her, and traps her in his arms. "Boss, let's talk this through. I know forty a month is a bit much — how about... five less?" Trapped in his embrace, Fu Xiaoxiao thinks he's unhappy with her high salary and starts bargaining. "I'm giving myself to you for free." Lu Feng grinds out through clenched teeth. This woman has no heart. "...Can I say no?" Fu Xiaoxiao swallows, staring at the washboard abs so close. "Such a good deal — are you sure you don't want it?" Lu Feng squints, tempting her. "Fine." A fool turns down a bargain.
