LOIRA PROMISE. (TRUTH AND RULE)
Liora, a village-trained apprentice mage, arrives for the first time in Lanternfall, a whimsical city that keeps its lanterns lit even in daylight and treats questions like bait. She chooses the dark brick shortcut into the city and, when a name-hunting paper-thing corners them, she uses rare old-school magic to force it to reveal its own name instead of taking hers. The shortcut “notices” her afterward, marking her as someone the city will pay attention to.
She’s taken in by Master Orren, an eccentric mage on High Row who recognizes immediately that she’s clever enough to protect herself but desperate enough to take risks. Liora gives him her letter and a chosen name (“Lark”) before her real name, trying to keep control of herself in a city that trades in identities. Orren offers her what she thinks she wants: power, fast enough to fulfill a promise she swore after failing to save someone back home. But he warns that power can also be what breaks promises, not just keeps them.
Her training begins with two foundations at once: rules (a binding vow not to trade names, hers or anyone else’s) and truth (a blindfolded confession meant to keep the city from stealing her story). As Liora stalls at the edge of that truth, it becomes clear the central tension isn’t just “learn magic,” but “learn what kind of person you become when your magic is fueled by a promise and a wound.”
