Introduction to the French heroine Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc (January 6, 1412-May 30, 1431) was a French national hero, a Christian saint, and an important figure in the Hundred Years War between England and France. Joan was born in a peasant family in the village of Domremy in the Meuse Valley, France. At the age of 13, she claimed to have seen a divine manifestation, and the god ordered her to go to Chinon three years later to meet the French Crown Prince, Charles, to help him coronate. After some twists and turns, she successfully met Charlie and won his trust. On May 8, 1429, Joan of Arc liberated the besieged city of Orléans. On July 17, Charles VII was crowned in Reims. In December of the same year, she was granted noble status and the title of "Saint Pierre". On May 23, 1430, Joan of Arc was captured by the Burgundians in Gompiennes and later sold to the British by the Duke of Burgundy. On January 3, 1431, he was handed over to the Bishop of England for interrogation. He was finally sentenced to be burned at the stake. On May 30, he was sentenced to death at the age of 19. In 1453, the Hundred Years War between England and France ended. In 1456, the court reopened the case of Joan of Arc and restored her reputation. In May 1920, Joan of Arc was posthumously canonized as a saint and was worshipped as a saint by the Roman Church. May 30th was designated as her anniversary. Joan of Arc was a famous military general. Her tactics had influenced the French army's future war forms. She herself had also become an important symbol of Western culture. French politicians had used her great image to promote her from different angles, and there were a large number of films, plays, and music creations based on her. Joan of Arc's End
Joan's fate was very tragic. In May 1430, when she retreated from the Battle of Compiegne, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to England at a high price by the Duke of Burgundy. In January 1431, a trial led by the English occupation government accusing Joan of heresy began in Rouen. The trial listed many crimes against Joan. Although she had expressed her willingness to repent under the threat of burning at the stake (she could have avoided death), the British were dissatisfied with this leniency and accused her of returning to her old ways after repentance. Finally, on May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc, who was only 19 years old, was burned at the stake and her remains were thrown into the Seine River. However, in 1456, the Roman Church declared the 1431 verdict invalid. The court re-examined the case and restored Joan's reputation. On May 16th, 1920, Joan was posthumously canonized as a saint and became a saint. May 30th was set as Joan's anniversary.
