I slowly, very, very quietly walked through the dark, unfamiliar forest I have decided to cross. This was a shortcut to the pack house from my house and I know my mother and stepfather would never think of looking for me hear. This was Dark Midnight pack's land. From a bird's eye view, my pack, the Dark Moon Pack land was shaped like a bean but the little curve of the bean was part of the Dark Midnight pack which now, I have to cross to get to my pack house. Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!... I feel my heart beating painfully fast. I was so scared of being caught by the alpha's guards if they ever caught a whiff of my scent. I wanted to reach out to my weak little wolf to have company while I crossed this particular portion of the Dark Midnight Pack's land but decided against it for fear the pack warriors might scent my wolf out. Not so far away, I can see the bright lights where I knew the house of the alpha was located. It was Damon's birthday party. The soon-to-be alpha of the pack and the biggest bully of the school I attended. "Almost halfway now." I said to myself as I caught a whiff of my pack's scent even though my pack's land was much too far away yet. Fixing my backpack which started to fall from my shoulders, I continued walking straight to where I knew my packs' land border was located but then my foot unintentionally stopped moving, seeming to have been rooted to the soft ground as panic and excitement start to swirl in my heart, as I smell the most amazing smell of pine and ocean breeze combined. "Mate." I realize my mate is presently at the alpha house where the soon-to-be alpha is celebrating his birthday. Thankful that I was gifted the sense of smell ten times stronger than any wolf that I could smell a certain scent even from miles away, I resolutely walk faster, determined to reach the border before my scents me out. My weak little wolf traitorously decides to accompany me on my little run from my house, across my nemesis' land, to my pack's pack house which lightly irritates me, as I know this could send my weak scent to my mate with a little wind movement. I was almost at least a few steps to the border when I realize that the beautiful scent of pine and ocean breeze is getting stronger. My mate must have scented me out and has moved from the house, looking for me. Goddess knows what would happen to me if I ever get caught by this pack's territory by any pack member, warrior, or by my nightmare, the soon-to-be-alpha himself. I feel my wolf whining, pleading for me to stay and wait for our mate to find us but with determination, I climb over the barbed wires separating the two pack lands, being careful not to have my clothes or bag entangled to the wires. As I reach the top, I smell that delicious smell getting even stronger and I cross first my right foot then my left over the top of the fence, feeling my heart beating so fast. I drop down from the top and ran to the direction of my pack's pack house just as I hear twigs getting stepped on from the direction I came from. Thank Goddess they will not be able to see me, hopefully, they would not try to climb the barbed wires as I did just to find me. Then I soothe my wolf, reminding her of all the bullying we have had to injure from the alpha and all other students from that pack. I take deep breathes to calm my heart before knocking at the door of the pack house.

The Color of Cold

The Color of Cold

Bria Stephens was an artist once. She painted cities at dusk in colors no one else could see — until someone she trusted told her she wasn't good enough. She never picked up a brush again. Now she's a senior editor at Caelum Press, one of the most prestigious publishing houses in the country. Her colleagues call her the Ice Queen of the slush pile. Authors fear her rejections. No one knows she still sees the world like a canvas — she just stopped letting anyone see her. Ryan Malcolm wasn't always Ryan Malcolm. He was born Dante Wards, in a neighborhood that tried to bury him. He failed. He lost everything. So he left, changed his name, and rebuilt himself from nothing. Now he's the cold, elusive CEO of Caelum Press — the company he built with his own hands. The only people who know the man beneath the armor are the younger sibling he raised alone, and the anonymous scholarship he funds for kids from his old streets. When an anonymous manuscript lands on Bria's desk — a story about a young artist who stopped painting, written with details no stranger should know — her carefully constructed walls begin to crack. Someone inside Caelum Press knows her secret. Someone is watching. At the same time, an inquiry into the Dante Wards Scholarship threatens to expose the past Ryan has spent years burying. Forced together by the threats circling them both, Bria and Ryan discover what they've been hiding from the world — and from themselves. Two people who built the same walls. Two people who recognize the armor because they wear the same kind. The world has already written Bria as the villainess. Ryan has been written as a ghost. But the story isn't over yet — and some stories can be rewritten. The Color of Cold is a slow-burn contemporary romance about art, survival, and what happens when two people who forgot how to feel finally let someone in.

Collapse Protocol

Collapse Protocol

In a world still healing from the Transparency Revolution that exposed global corruption, violence begins rising again across Mumbai—quietly, strangely, without warning. Ordinary people display inhuman reflexes, unpredictable instincts, and terrifying bursts of clarity in fights. Officials blame stress. The media blames unrest. No one knows the truth. Arjun is the kind of boy who should never be caught in this chaos—quiet, overlooked, bullied, living each day in survival mode. He’s not fast, not skilled, and not brave. Yet whenever danger closes in, something inside him reacts before he can think. A glance he shouldn't notice. A footstep he shouldn't hear. A punch he shouldn't avoid. Everyone around him is changing in violent, unpredictable ways. But Arjun… stays calm. When he survives an attack that should have killed him, he begins to notice the truth: the world is shifting, people are breaking, and whatever is happening to them… isn't happening to him. As more strange incidents spread across the city, Arjun finds himself caught between students who fight like cornered animals, strangers whose instincts feel manufactured, and forces far bigger than any schoolyard conflict. He isn’t trying to become a hero. He isn’t trying to understand the world. He just wants to stay alive. But survival comes with a cost—because once the wrong people notice someone who doesn’t break, they don’t let go. And Arjun is about to find out that the most dangerous thing in this changing world… is a mind that refuses to fall apart.

What makes Fitzpatrick YA books build to a crescendo?
In Fitzpatrick YA books, the setting can contribute to the crescendo. If the story is set in a world with its own rules and secrets, as the story progresses, those rules and secrets are gradually uncovered. Let's say it's a magical world. At first, only a few magical elements are shown, but as the characters explore more, more and more of the magic is revealed. This exploration and discovery, along with any threats or challenges related to the setting, build up the story until it reaches a high point, just like a crescendo in music.

Colleen, tell me a story.
A long time ago, in a far - away kingdom, there was a brave knight named Sir Henry. He was known throughout the land for his courage and kindness. One day, the king received news that a fearsome dragon was terrorizing a nearby village. Sir Henry immediately volunteered to go and slay the dragon. When he reached the village, he saw the destruction the dragon had caused. He searched for the dragon in the mountains. After a long and difficult journey, he finally found the dragon's lair. Instead of fighting right away, he tried to communicate with the dragon. It turned out that the dragon was in pain because of a poisoned arrow in its side. Sir Henry removed the arrow and the dragon became his friend. They returned to the village together, and the dragon promised never to harm anyone again.
