Joan of Arc's End
Joan's fate was very tragic. In May 1430, when she retreated from the Battle of Compiegne, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to England at a high price by the Duke of Burgundy. In January 1431, a trial led by the English occupation government accusing Joan of heresy began in Rouen. The trial listed many crimes against Joan. Finally, on May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc, who was only 19 years old, was burned at the stake and her remains were thrown into the Seine River. However, in 1456, the Roman Church declared the 1431 verdict invalid. The court re-examined the case and restored Joan's reputation. On May 16th, 1920, Joan was posthumously canonized as a saint and became a saint. May 30th was set as Joan's anniversary.
