The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man. The Muppets play various characters. Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows him his lonely childhood and lost love. The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals the joys of the present he's missing out on. And the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come scares him with a vision of his lonely death. In the end, Scrooge changes his ways and becomes a kind and generous man, celebrating Christmas with joy.

The two really don't have much in common. 'A Christmas Story' focuses on a specific family's Christmas experiences, and the Muppets are all about bringing entertainment through puppet characters in various settings. Maybe there could be some inspiration drawn from the spirit of the season, but that's about it.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a main character, he's the one who goes through the transformation. Kermit the Frog also plays an important role. Miss Piggy is there too. And there are the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come which are key in changing Scrooge's attitude towards Christmas and life in general.
