When the Gilded Canary Flew
"I'm sorry, Ms. Valenti, but our records show your name has never been on the official Carbone family register."
The archivist's words hung in the air, my knuckles whitening around the pregnancy report. My knees nearly gave out on the cold marble floor.
Five years ago, when Chase Carbone returned to Chicago to take over the family business, I didn't hesitate to give up an advanced training opportunity at a top studio in Florence to follow this dangerous man into his dark kingdom.
He had once whispered in my ear, "Once my position is stable, I'll make it official. You'll be the true lady of this family."
Yet, five years had passed, and my status remained unofficial. Meanwhile, Camilla Gallo, the "business partner" who had returned with him, had long since received the family's formal recognition and the respect that came with it, all under his protection.
I fought him over this, threatening to return to the East Coast. For the first time, the usually composed Underboss of the Carbone family lost his composure.
He gripped my wrist, his eyes bloodshot. "Camilla and her family are crucial to our business. Accepting her is a strategic necessity. You are my woman; your position is second to none. My recent operations are critical, and I can't afford any mistakes. Understand?"
But I had been "understanding" for five whole years.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
Chase's excited voice came through the line. "The merger with the Gallo family is officially done. We're having a party at the manor tonight to celebrate. You need to play hostess and make sure everyone's taken care of."
I glanced down at the unsanctioned ring on my finger, a private gift from him, and a chill settled deep in my bones. It turned out I had never been officially acknowledged by his family. My baby and I had no official standing or protection in his dark empire.
After hanging up, I didn't book a caterer for the evening's banquet. I scheduled an abortion. And I booked the earliest one-way ticket to Portland.
Chase Carbone, this time, I'm not coming back.
