Introduction and characteristics of the ancient town of Meicheng

"The Ancient Town of Mei City: The Forgotten Pearl of History" Meicheng Ancient Town was a thousand-year-old town located in Jiande City, Hangzhou City. It was like a dusty pearl, emitting a low-key and charming light. From the long river of history, the ancient town of Meicheng had a deep foundation. Its history could be traced back to the Three Kingdoms period, and it had been established for nearly 1800 years. It was once the seat of the ancient Yan Prefecture and occupied an important position on the stage of history. In its heyday, it was as famous as Huzhou Prefecture, Hangzhou Prefecture, Shaoxing Prefecture, Jinhua Prefecture, etc. It was the political, cultural, commercial, and shipping center of tens of thousands of square kilometers in western Zhejiang. Since the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, it had been the seat of the state capital for more than 1,300 years. During the Ming Dynasty, this place was the place where the country's high-end talents were produced. The results of the imperial examinations were remarkable, and many top scholars, scholars, and juren were produced. Dozens of memorial archways were built for this purpose, and many indicators ranked second in Zhejiang for a long time. Many famous scholars such as Du Mu, Fan Zhongyan, Lu You, etc. were officials here. Wu Zixu, Zhu Maichen, etc. also left their footprints here. They were either officials, lecturers, or reclusive travelers, leaving behind countless allusions and good stories. The ancient town of Meicheng had a unique geographical location. It was located at the confluence of Xin 'an River, Lanjiang River and Fuchun River. It was the main waterway connecting Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Fujian and other places. It was also the water transportation hub and main commercial port of western Zhejiang, southern Guizhou and northeastern Jiangxi. Before the Xin 'an River dam was formed, this was the only way from Hangzhou to Wannan. The architectural features of the ancient town were distinctive. The ancient city wall was first built in the 18th year of Muzhou. The shape of the battlements was half a plum blossom. Looking down from the sky, it was unique. It was the same size as the plum blossom battlements in Beijing and Nanjing. Therefore, it had the good name of "Two and a half plum blossoms in the world, one in Beijing, one in Nanjing, and half in Yanzhou (Mei City)". There were many ancient buildings in the town, such as the former site of Xinhua Bookstore, the old post office, Sanxing Street, Sifan Square, Jiandehou Square, etc. Although some of the buildings were imitations, the real ancient buildings had a unique charm. Many brick and tile buildings had exquisite stone carvings on their doors and windows. Although the surface of the ancient wooden buildings had been dyed dark brown by time, it was carved with exquisite patterns. Jiande Archway stood in the middle of the main street. The ancient and exquisite stone sculptures seemed to be telling the glory of the past. The city walls of Yan Prefecture were tall and majestic. Although some of them were newly built, the overall view was still magnificent. The city walls were very wide. On one side was the river, and on the other side was the ancient city. There was a seven-story pagoda on each of the mountain peaks in the north and south of the town. The South Peak Pagoda and the North Peak Pagoda faced each other across the river and soared into the clouds. They were called the Twin Towers Towering Clouds. The natural scenery of the ancient town of Meicheng was also extremely beautiful. It was surrounded by mountains and rivers, and it had the exquisite beauty unique to Jiangnan. The scenery of the small bridge and flowing water was picturesque. Climbing up the city wall, one could see the beautiful Xin 'an River landscape gallery. It was shrouded in smoke and fog, and the light boat sailed past like a natural amorous painting. Boating on the small lake was surrounded by the beautiful scenery of ink painting, which made people feel relaxed and happy. However, such an ancient town with a rich history, culture, unique architecture, and beautiful scenery was now little known. Although there were no tickets, there were fewer tourists. Although there were many shops on both sides of the stone street, many shops were deserted. They were so low-key that they were almost forgotten in the modern tourism market. The ancient town of Meicheng was like a beautiful woman in her twilight years, quietly waiting for more people to discover its beauty and regain its former glory.
