Jiangnan did not belong to only one province. From a geographical point of view, Jiangnan had many divisions. The Great Jiangnan referred to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, sometimes including parts of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River; the Middle Jiangnan mainly referred to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, covering Jiangxi; and the Small Jiangnan mainly referred to the Yangtze River Delta and its surrounding areas. After the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Jiangnan referred to the small Jiangnan. The basic scope of the small Jiangnan extended to the east and west with the Taihu Lake basin as the center, including Nanjing and Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province, Shaoxing and Ningbo in Zhejiang Province, Wuhu and Huizhou in Jiangsu Province, Wuyuan in Jiangxi Province, and Yangzhou, Taizhou and Nanchong in Jiangsu Province north of the Yangtze River. According to the "China's Meteorology and Meteorology Division," Jiangnan referred to the areas between the Yangtze River and Nanling, including Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and northern Fujian (extending eastward from Nanling).
