In ancient China, not every dynasty could easily marry three wives.

From the perspective of laws and systems, during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, monogamy was clearly written into the law. Only those who were over forty years old and had no children could take in a concubine. In the Jin Dynasty, Sima Yan, Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty, stipulated that women over the age of 17 who had not yet married had to be uniformly assigned husbands by the state. Moreover, these women had to be selected by the emperor first, so it was difficult to marry more than one wife.

In the Tang Dynasty, the rules on taking concubines were relatively loose. There were clear rules on the number of concubines that people of different ranks could take. The prince could take twelve concubines, the king and first-grade officials could take ten, second-grade officials could take eight, third-grade officials could take six, fourth-grade officials could take four, and fifth-grade officials could take three, etc. However, ordinary people did not have the right to take concubines. Only those over 40 years old and without children could take a concubine to carry on the family line.
