From a scientific point of view, death was a complicated process. When a person died, their vital signs would stop, including the heart, breathing, and brain activity. The brain was thought to be the key organ that produced and maintained consciousness. Once the brain stopped functioning, consciousness would disappear, and everything would be reduced to ashes.

In terms of the physiological process of death, shortly after death, the corpse began to decompose itself. The first few minutes of this process were called " autolyzation " or " self-digestion." The tissues and cells lost their activity and dissolved under the effect of the enzyme. The texture of the organs became soft, and the structure blurred until the nucleus disappeared. At the same time, the body temperature dropped, and the corpse began to stiffen from the eyelids, chin, and neck. After that, the ecosystem of the corpse was mainly composed of bacteria that were active inside and outside the human body, and various parts of the body provided a place for the bacteria to multiply. In a mild and normal environment, the corpse would decompose about three days after death, and the color would change further. The air pressure in the body would increase, and gas and liquefied gas might be discharged from the anus or other pores of the body. Sometimes, the pressure would cause the abdomen to burst. As the corpse decomposed, it would attract insects to lay eggs. After the maggots hatched, they would feed on the carrion and continue to evolve until their nutrients were exhausted.

However, there was still no conclusion about near-death experiences. Some near-death experiencers claimed to be able to hear their surroundings, see some scenes, feel their souls leave their bodies, and might even see their deceased relatives. Some physiologists believed that near-death experiences were hallucinations caused by the brain secreting excessive chemicals such as ketamine-induced hallucinations in an oxygen deficient environment. However, a considerable number of scientists believed that near-death experiences proved that consciousness could still exist after the brain stopped its activity. The brain might just be the carrier of consciousness rather than the source of consciousness.
