Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was born on July 16, 1872 and died on June 18, 1928. He was a Arctic explorer from Norway. He was the first to sail the Northwest Passage, opening up a route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through the northern waters of North America, becoming the only global navigator to sail along the entire coastline of the Arctic Ocean. The second was to be the first to reach the South Pole. On August 9, 1910, he and his companions set sail south from Norway on the exploration ship Fram and arrived at the South Pole on December 14, 1911. This was the first time humans had reached the southernmost tip of the Earth. He planted a Swedish flag there and left after observing for three days. On his return trip, he was killed by a blizzard. In 1926, he and the Italian explorer Umberto Nobil circled the North Pole twice in an airship. In 1928, during another flight over the North Pole, Nobil's airship collided with another flying object and crashed. Amundsen disappeared while searching for Nobil. In 1911, he first discovered the peaks of the Quarles Range in the Queen Moud Mountains in Antarctica.
