CCTV Shangganling TV Series
The TV series Shangganling was jointly produced by CCTV, Youku, and Bona Film. Dong was the producer and chief producer of the drama. Liu Weiqiang was the director, and Huang Xuan, Wang Lei, and many other actors were involved. This 26-episode TV series focused on the 8th Company of the 134th Regiment of the 45th Division of the 15th Army, with the commanders of the 12th Army as the secondary line. It mainly told the story of the China People's Liberation Army in the Battle of Shangganling in the Korean War. Through arduous battles and ingenious tunnel fortifications, they successfully repelled the "Jin Hua offensive" of the "United Nations Army" and reversed the entire war situation. In the Battle of Shangganling, which began in October 1952, the "United Nations Army" launched a fierce attack. The volunteer soldiers fought tenaciously. The difference in firepower between the enemy and the enemy was huge. The mountain of the volunteer army was cut down by two meters, and the artillery fire density exceeded the highest level of World War II. However, the volunteer soldiers fought with the enemy with tenacious fighting spirit. They relied on tactical wisdom to fight for 43 days in a row, repeatedly competing with the "United Nations Army" for 59 times, repelling more than 900 charges of the "United Nations Army". In the end, they successfully defended their position and turned the tide of the battle. They set up the 381 bullet hole flag on the high ground. In order to be close to the truth, the play specially hired veterans, experts and scholars as military and literary advisors, striving to present the original appearance of the Battle of Shangganling in a comprehensive and objective manner. The drama was broadcast on Central TV Department 1 on October 14, 2024. Youku and Mi Gu's videos were broadcast simultaneously.

The new version of Shangganling TV series
The new version of Shangganling TV series was broadcasted on October 14th, 2024 on the primetime slot of Central TV Department 1. The drama was directed by Liu Weiqiang and starred by Huang Xuan and Wang Lei. This drama performed well in terms of viewership ratings. The highest viewership rating for a single episode in 35 central cities reached 1.4%, and the highest viewership share for a single episode reached 6.24%. The real-time viewership rating of Kuyun exceeded 2%. It had a unique story structure. It used the growth of Huang Xuan's character, Duan Xianfeng, to drive the plot, connecting the heroic deeds, tactical wisdom, and fighting spirit of the volunteers. Duan Xianfeng had abandoned his pen and joined the army from a teaching assistant in a military school. From a lack of actual combat experience, he had gradually grown into an excellent grass-roots commander. His growth trajectory reflected the transformation process from a scholar to a soldier. It also reflected the concept that people were the key to winning a battle. The play also showed the cruelty and heroism of the war through Duan Xianfeng's perspective, such as reappearing the moment of Huang Jiguang's heroic sacrifice, and in terms of humane care, it ran through the spiritual main line of "let more soldiers come back alive", and also reflected the historical inheritance of "Sanwan adaptation" to build the branch in the company. However, the drama received some criticism at the beginning of its broadcast. Compared with the 1956 classic film version, the audience had high expectations for the new TV series, but it failed to meet the audience's expectations in some aspects. There were problems with the casting, such as the audience's dissatisfaction with the performance of some actors in the play. At the same time, although there was a 250 million investment in the production, the scenes, costumes, special effects, etc. did not reach the ideal effect, and the war scenes lacked realism. Moreover, in order to prolong the plot, a large number of emotional scenes were added, which was accused of turning the war drama into an idol drama, which was suspected of blaspheming history.
