Xu Xiaohu was born in Nanjing on March 20, 1934. His English name was Joan Stanley-Baker1. She completed her elementary and junior high school studies in Rome, Chongqing, and Shanghai. He studied at Bennington College in the United States and studied China art history at Princeton University in the United States. He studied under Fang Wen, but was expelled due to disagreement with his mentor.
