Xu Shuwei, also known as Zhike, also known as Baisha, also known as Jinquan, lived from 1079 to 1154. He was born in Baisha, Zhenzhou (now Yizheng City, Jiangsu Province) and was a medical expert of the Southern Song Dynasty.

He was born into a family of ordinary military officers. His father, Xu Jun, was a seventh-grade military officer, Zuo Yi's martial arts Lang. At the age of 11, Xu Shuwei experienced a family accident. Her father died of a plague, and three months later, her mother died of overwork. Although his family was unfortunate, he was also lucky. When he was eight years old, he received the treatise on typhoid fever. After his parents passed away, he took the book as his companion and studied it diligently.

Xu Shuwei had superb medical skills and was once a scholar of the Imperial Academy. He was respectfully called Scholar Xu. He had a profound study of the "Shang Han Lun". He was one of the founders of the School of Classic Recipes and the pioneer of the School of Shang Han. He respected Zhang Zhongjing as a medical saint and elaborated and supplemented the theory of syndrome identification and treatment. His academic thought was more prominent in his understanding of the relationship between spleen and kidney. He wrote medical works such as "Song of 100 Forms of Shang Han","On the Micro-development of Shang Han","Ninety Theory of Shang Han" and "Puji Benshi Fang".

Xu Shuwei had a deep benevolence as a doctor. When he became an adult, he was determined to become a good doctor who cured people and treated them for free for the rest of his life. In the process of practicing medicine, he had treated Qiu Zhongchen. In the face of doubts and urgent requests from his family members, he always insisted on his own judgment, showing his deep medical foundation, deep understanding of Typhoid, and persistence and patience under pressure.

Xu Shuwei was also keen on sharing medical knowledge. In that era when secret recipes were regarded as the foundation of life, he selflessly taught his students what he had learned in his life and compiled the secret recipes he had collected into a book, such as Puji Benshi Fang.

Xu Shuwei had experienced official career, successively serving as a professor of Huizhou and Hangzhou government schools and a scholar of the Imperial Academy. However, because he was dissatisfied with Gaozong's attempt to settle down in Jiangnan and Qin Hui's framing of Zhongliang, he retired to the village to practice medicine and help people. He was very close to Han Shizhong, a famous general who resisted the Jin Dynasty. At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, he was disheartened by the situation of treacherous officials and political corruption. He resigned in anger and lived in seclusion in the "Mei Liang Xiao Yin" on the shore of Taihu Lake. He spent the rest of his life there and continued to devote himself to studying medical skills, treating the people and writing books. He published all the secret recipes he collected to the world, leaving a precious medical wealth for future generations.
