Wu Kangren Fudu Youth Best Performance
Wu Kangren's best performance in the movie Fudu Youth was when he played the deaf-mute brother Ah Bang. He mainly conveyed the character's emotions through sign language and facial expressions. His prison sign language scenes were the highlight moments. In these scenes, he deeply conveyed the character's despair, anger, and desire for life. He had specially learned sign language for this character and communicated with people with hearing impairments to more realistically present the character's daily life and emotions. For example, in the film, although he only had three lines of "I want to die"(which actually expressed that he wanted to live), he used silent performances such as sign language and facial expressions to vividly show the struggle of a deaf-mute person at the bottom and his desire for a normal life. Especially before the death penalty, he broke down because of the Mandarin phrase,"If you're alive, you have to live well." He complained about his life, saying,"I want to live, but how can I live?" This silent performance won him the Best Actor Award at the 60th Golden Horse Awards for this role, and was also recognized by the audience and professional judges.
